Special varieties

Because of subtle differences between the dies used to mint Peace Dollars, there are a few different varieties available for collectors. Some notable examples include:

• 1926 (all mints): The word God is in high relief for all dollars minted this year. It has been speculated that this was a mint engraver’s protest of the Scopes Monkey Trial.Because of their large mintage, coins from this year are not particularly valuable.
• 1926-S: The “S” mintmark may be higher or lower than normal.
• 1934-D: The “D” mintmark may be small or large, depending on the coin.
• 1935-S: Because of a new reverse die at the San Francisco mint, some examples have an extra ray below the “ONE.” There is no price difference between this and the usual three ray variety.
